ADHD and Building Mental Resilience

Let’s chat about ADHD and building mental resilience. Resilience is being able to “bounce back” when things go wrong, to thrive despite challenges, to “overcome” and “persevere.” Building mental resilience helps us to develop coping strategies that deal with our daily ADHD struggles in a healthy way.

ADHD can present some distinct and unique challenges such as inattention, difficulty focusing, hyperactivity, impulsivity, and more. We can struggle with all sorts of executive functions like organization, time management, emotional regulation, prioritizing, and working memory.  These struggles lead to potential difficulties in school, at work, with your friends and relationships, and your relationship with yourself.

We know that ADHD brains have actual differences in the way they are structured and the way that they function. In specific, we have a deficiency in a specific neurotransmitters – dopamine and norepinephrine. The differences can be seen in the different areas of our brains. You can read more about ADHD and The Brain HERE.

ADHD comes with plenty of challenges, however we people with ADHD brains are often gifted in other areas. Some of my favorite ADHD people are creative, persistent, rule breakers, free thinkers, adaptable changemakers. When you use these gifts to navigate the daily challenges of ADHD, coping with setbacks, leaning into strengths and fostering development you build mental resilience. The stronger your mental resilience, the easier it is to battle those ADHD gremlins.

In order to increase your mental resilience, you need to become more self aware, reflect on your weaknesses and your strengths, examine your coping strategies, and cultivate a growth mindset. Then you will be able to recover from setbacks more quickly, adapt to changes, regulate your emotions and make choices with the confidence that comes with self awareness and understanding.
